One Party to Rule them All

“You shall not…. WIN!” boomed Sir Ian McKellen in his biggest Gandalf vs. the Balrog voice. This was after rushing down the red carpet and up the stairs to TheOneRing®.net – Sideshow/Weta Collectibles 2002 Oscar party, “One Party to Rule Them All.” The four hundred and fifty fans in the sold-out black-tie event went wild. Although The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Director Peter Jackson, Sir Ian McKellen and Rings Executive Producer Mark Ordesky walked out of The Kodak Theater empty-handed Sunday night, it didn’t matter to the fans gathered at The Hollywood Athletic Club. The exuberant Richard Taylor, two Oscars in hand, spoke to the fans and graciously posed for pictures. Jim Rygiel and Randall William Cook who, with Taylor, won for Best Visual Effects, arrived with their Oscars, as did composer Howard Shore, who took the award for Music (Score). Peter Jackson’s partner and Oscar-nominated co-screenwriter, co-producer, Fran Walsh was also in attendance, as was co-screenwriter Philippa Boyens.

After the golden statuettes had been lined up neatly in a row, Peter Jackson took the mic in front of the packed crowd and thanked the fans for their overwhelming support. “This is great, this is the party I really wanted to come to tonight. It’s really cool!” beamed Jackson to the room full of fans.

Jackson was so appreciative of TheOneRing®.net’s support that he wore a special sterling silver leaf clip created especially for Fellowship of the Rings Oscar nominees by Badali Jewelry . The clip was enameled in green with silver script reading, “Good Luck from TheOneRing.net.” Jackson wore the clip on his tuxedo lapel during the ceremony, as did Jim Rygiel and Mark Ordesky. Badali Jewelry also manufactures and sells reproductions of the One Ring from The Lord of the Rings.

The “One Party to Rule Them All” was co-produced by the fan site TheOneRing®.net and Sideshow/Weta Collectibles. TheOneRing®.net, known as TORn, was voted Best Tolkien Megasite by Yahoo!® Internet Life Magazine. In addition to Sideshow/Weta, party sponsors were the official The Lord of the Rings Fan Club, Decipher, Electronic Arts Games, Houghton Mifflin and Royal Selangor Pewter. Sponsors donated merchandise, which was raffled to fans and silently auctioned. The party’s goal was achieved and the site raised enough money to purchase a new server to keep up with the high volume of site traffic.

Fans paid only $35.00 US for admittance and each received a “Goody Baggins” valued at $56.00 US from sponsor-donated products. Each “Goody Baggins” contained: one Sideshow/Weta Collectible Medallion #1 "The Orcs of Moria" limited edition collectible that came with a certificate of authenticity and was numbered and print-signed by the sculptor; a pack of Decipher’s new The Lord of the Rings - Mines of Moria Trading Card Game starter deck; and a copy of either The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Visual Companion or The Lord of the Rings Official Movie Guide from longtime Tolkien publisher Houghton Mifflin.

Rings fans were an enthusiastic and well-behaved crowd who stayed late and seemed to have a great time. Many came decked out in their finest formal wear, but a few came garbed for Middle-earth. Elven princesses were abundant as well as Hobbits, Gondorians, a Ringwraith and a Wizard. Some Sideshow Toy employees arrived in white dinner jackets and specially made fez hats adorned with The Eye of Sauron, and the Fan Club Members who arrived in stretch limos didn’t mind that the line to enter the party stretched halfway down the block. TV crews worked overtime as CNN, the BBC, New Zealand’s Channel One, Access Hollywood, and others interviewed fans, TheOneRing®.net staff, and VIPs.

Jackson's epic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's literary classic led all films with 13 nominations going into Sunday's Academy Awards®. Jackson and Taylor were nominated for three Oscars each. The film won awards for Cinematography, Makeup, Visual Effects and Music (Score). When Weta’s Richard Taylor was told that fans had flown from Germany, Brazil, England, Quebec, and all over the United States to attend the party, he raised up his statuettes and quipped, “We’ve come from New Zealand!” bringing down the house. Taylor was the recipient of the awards for Makeup and Visual Effects. As he was leaving the party he allowed the fans to hold and touch his golden knights, perhaps acknowledging that the success of The Lord of the Rings has as much to do with them as with the filmmakers.
