After a deep anal probe of the BBFC the following nuggets of fun were dug up for the Frighteners Special Edition Extras:
THE FRIGHTENERS - INTRO TO FEATURE THEATRICAL - 2m 20s
THE FRIGHTENERS - INTRO TO FEATURE DIRECTOR'S - 2m 39sCUT
THE FRIGHTENERS - INTRO TO MAKING OF - 1m 55s
Now whats intresting is the seperate Theatrical and Directors cur intros. I guess we can now expect BOTH versions to be included in the DVD set. Either via seamless (haha) branching or it being on another disk. I guess that would explain why the French Edition has announced the release as a 3 disk set. Whether the US R1 version will have this is not clear yet, but defiantely the UK R2 version will.
So look foawrd to seeing a new slim trim PJ introducing each of the featurettes!

Universal Studios Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of King Kong: Peter Jackson's Production Diaries for 13th December 2005 priced at $39.98 SRP. This two-disc set is timed to coincide with the theatrical release of Peter Jackson's King Kong, giving viewers an insight to the production via a series of diaries packaged in a Limited Edition Gift Set complete with an 80-Page Scrapbook fo Drawings, Photographs, Images and Notes from Peter Jackson, 4 Exclusive Production Art Prints and a Letter of Authenticity.
The Production Diaries are presented in 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with English DD2.0 Stereo sound and optional English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles.
Wow. Talk about getting every penny you can. Either download them off Kong is King or pay for them on DVD. Now I do like the principle of the idea, but c'mon! shouldnt these just be included on the DVD release of Kong? As one person on a forum quite brilliantly put it :
Releasing the extras before the DVD-how quaint!Peter Jackson appears to believe that his every fart is worth preserving for posterity-I'm sure that when King Kong does appear on DVD it'll be available in a 6 disc deluxe edition with limited Edition figurine and 25 hours of repetitive extras.

Here at TBHL we like to get to the bottom of things. Right to the very bottom! So we have been doing some sniffing around on the BBFC and guess what we found! We found the submitted documentary parts that they have classified. So what does this mean? Well it appears that documentary is split into 5 parts. Now each part is just under an hour in length. Here are the exact details :
26/09/2005 Universal Pictures (UK) Ltd - 58m 2s
THE FRIGHTENERS - MASTER REEL 1
19/09/2005 Universal Pictures (UK) Ltd - 51m 21s
THE FRIGHTENERS - MASTER REEL 2
26/09/2005 Universal Pictures (UK) Ltd - 53m 48s
THE FRIGHTENERS - MASTER REEL 3
26/09/2005 Universal Pictures (UK) Ltd - 51m 15s
THE FRIGHTENERS - MASTER REEL 5
Now we are missing the 4th reel, but im pretty sure from my calculations (having owning the out of print LD) that the 4th reel will be approx 54mins. This means that the documentary by all approximation will be full and uncut.
Hooray Universal! You've made me a happy bastard! :)

A fantastic PJ reference this week on Fox's American Dad. After a fun filled heavily referenced Star Wars and Lord of the Rings episode (including a fantastic parody of star wars kid!) this came up:
Frodo:Frodo lives, and you must die!
Steve Smith:Not so fast Halfling! This is the underwear Peter Jackson wore while editing The Frighteners! (sets underwear on fire)
Frodo:Noooooooo! (desperatly trys to stamp out the flaming mass of staind underwear)
Great to see PJ being such a icon of pouplar culture! Next stop sThe Simpsons' I say!

TBHL allready informed you that there will be a FRIGHTENERS special editon released on DVD on November 29th (US release date!). We have allready shown you the sweet new cover and the only question we need a answer for is: how many discs will the SE include? Maybe the French will have the answer! Yes, the FRENCH...finally they are usefull for something. Just kidding! :P Back to topic. The French will get a fine 3 disc (!!!) special editon. Thatīs a good sign I would say because that should be enough space for the fantastic 4,5 hour documentary that was allready released 1999 on laserdisc and a hell of a lot of other stuff. And now the cover of the French DVD set (taken from "www.dvdrama.com"):

Okay, right now nobody knows how many discs the SE will include in other countries but I cannot imagine that there is a diferrence. ;) So, hail to the French who released that DVD cover and gave us hope!
BTW "www.dvdanswers.com" released the following screen captures of the SE DVD menue...sweet, eh?

Oh...and just for the record: the German fans have to wait a lil bit longer for a release of the SE on DVD. Universal sent me an Email and said that right now they dont any plans to releasse it in the German speaking countries.

Universal Studios Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Frighteners Director's Cut for 29th November 2005 priced at $26.98 SRP. After years of campaigning Universal are finally giving fans what they want, the director's cut edition of Peter Jackson's horror-comedy starring Michael J. Fox - The Frighteners.
Running 2hrs 3minutes the director's cut will be presented in 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with English DD5.1 Surround audio and optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. Released on a single DVD18 Universal's promotional details say we can expect over 4 hours of bonus features. Expect full specs soon...
The real question remians what those 4 hours of extras will be and whether it will be the 4.5 hour documentary that was included on the pioneer laserdisc. The problem at the moment is how Universal have announced the release being a DVD18 disc. How can the 2 hour film and the 4.5 hour documentary all fir on the 1 disc? One person off a dvd forum addressed this:
"It's completely possible to put a 4 1/2 hour documentary on a DVD-9. The DVD spec in theory (according to the fabled DVD FAQ) allows for something in the region of 15 hours of VHS quality video on a DVD-9, and there's no way the documentary for The Frighteners was shot on high end digital video in 1995. So cross your fingers and touch wood. I think there's little doubt that this disc is being produced with Peter Jackson's involvement, so that should mean only one thing: a complete port of the legendary Pioneer laserdisc"
Another person has pointed out:
"The recent Scarface dvd fits a widescreen 170 minute movie, a DTS track, a dolby digial track, in addition to French and Spanish track on one disc, so surely a 270 minute 4:3 documentary with a basic stereo track could be squeezed on, even if picture quality isn't exactly as good as the film, as long as it's all there......"
All things point that it is fully possible for the documentary in its entirety to be added. Lets hope Universal doesnt pull a fast one on us like with the Jaws documentary being cut down by half its length when released in 1999!

A load of you probably noticed we've been screwing around with the news comments system (judging by the number of comments we recieved on the test articles we placed up :S). The old system was getting spammed by some crappy poker sites spam-bot. This new system uses the YaBB message boards, so it should be a bit more secure. It'll hopefully get more people active in the forums too.So what're you waiting for peeps? Get commenting!
