When one Pianist isnt enough, what do you do?
- Submitted by Lewman

You employ another! Thats right the next star inline for Jacksons remake of 'King Kong' is none other than Adrien Brody's co-star in 'The Pianist', Thomas Kretschmann!

Thomas Kretschmann is in talks to join the cast of Peter Jackson's King Kong for Universal Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter. Kretschmann (The Pianist, Resident Evil: Apocalypse) would play opposite Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody as the boat captain who transports the king-sized gorilla of the film's title to America.

The screenplay by Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy) is based on the original story by Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace. Jackson will employ the latest motion picture technology to cinematically portray the timeless tale of the beast and his beauty. He will expand on the chapters of the tale that take place in the mysterious and dangerous jungles of Skull Island, and his Kong promises to be a unique and breathtaking creation.

Kretschmann has also been cast in Dean Koontz's Frankenstein for USA Network. King Kong hits theaters on December 14, 2005.

Jackson spending US$50m on Wellington studios
- Submitted by Lewman

Peter Jackson has earned more than $US125 million ($NZ200 million) from his Lord of the Rings trilogy and is spending $US50 million of it expanding his Wellington studios, Forbes magazine has reported.

The American business magazine detailed the director's earnings in its annual Top 100 Celebrity List. Jackson's ranking – based on earnings, media attention and influence – jumped from No. 27 last year to No. 12, due to the success of the Oscar-winning The Return of the King.

"Jackson, 42, suddenly is one of the richest and most powerful people in the movie business," it said.

The director told the magazine a large part of his earnings were being spent on his studios in Miramar. "We just had this money coming in from Lord of the Rings, so we just turned it all around and put it into this."

It included $US35 million for the state-of-the-art post-production facility Park Road Post and $US7 million on a new sound stage in Stone St.

Jackson earned $US35 million in the past 12 months, partly from a 7.5 per cent cut of gross profits from DVD sales of The Two Towers and box-office earnings for Return of the King. That was on top of being paid $US20 million with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens to make King Kong. He could not be reached for comment.

WETA could have been involved in the making of Red Dwarf.
- Submitted by Lewman

Just read this letter from Doug Naylor (producer of Red Dwarf) on Reddwarf.co.uk. It appears that WETA approached the producer and writer of the tv series and proposed movie to do the SFX, although it never panned out. Still intresting to read as I'm sure they would have done an excellent job!

God damn it! I so want this film to be made. Its even up there with The Hobbit! ;)

...Then one day we got a call from a guy who represented WETA, the guys who made Lord of the Rings, they wondered if they could do the special effects for the Red Dwarf movie. I said I doubted we could afford them. They said they were fans and would love to work on the project and could cut us a deal. For a time we talked about shooting in New Zealand in the Weta studios, because Peter Jackson was planning on taking a break after Return of the King. For a few short days it all looked good, then Peter decided not to take his sabbatical and go straight onto King Kong and another plan hit the dust.

The Weta guys wished us well and recommended I check out Australia. I did - for almost two months, checking out locations, VFX houses, putting together yet another production team. Everything looked good apart from the fact we still didn't have the money in place. But it was coming. Another funder had shown us he had money and was happy to invest

Kathy writes: I was watching this show on MTV called "Your Face or Mine," and two contestants were voting on who the audience would find the most attractive out of two people. As I turned it on, the two people they had to vote on were Peter Jackson and Michael Moore! The contestants chose Peter, and the host revealed that the audience also chose Peter, with him winning 81% of the votes!

Not PJ News but still cool news! Dawn of the Dead 4 Disc Collectors Edition DVD announced!
- Submitted by Lewman

When there is no more room in hell, the dead shall walk the earth. And, apparently, there are so many of them that only four discs could contain it. Yes, Anchor Bay Entertainment is unleashing a new Collector's Edition of George Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead on September 7th, and this four disc set (yes, four discs) just may be one of the most extensive ever created.

So, what are you gonna get? How about the film's theatrical cut, a new extended cut and the European "Zombie" Cut (each gets their own disc), presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 and DTS 5.1 surround tracks on the theatrical cut, Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 for the Euro cut, and Dolby mono only for the extended version, plus audio commentary with Romero, his wife Chris, makeup legend Tom Savini and moderator Perry Martin on the theatrical cut, producer Richard P. Rubinstein and Martin on the extended cut, and stars David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger and Gaylen Ross on the Euro cut. Disc Four features the new 75-minute "The Dead Will Walk" documentary (featuring interviews with all of the above plus Claudio and Dario Argento, Pat and Tony Buba, Zilla Clinton, Michael Gornick, Claudio Simonetti and more), the original "Document of the Dead" documentary by Roy Frumkes, on-set home movie footage and a Monroeville Mall tour hosted by Romero. Other extras include five still galleries with domestic and international advertising, poster, lobby card and marketing materials, filmographies, a comic book preview, a Monroeville TV commercial, and theatrical trailers, TV and radio spots from around the world. Retail for this puppy will be $49.95.

Excellent news I'm sure you'll agree. Plus it's one of PJs fave films :)

Uni's 'Kong' makes monkey out of Serkis
- Submitted by Lewman

Andy Serkis, the man behind the popular Gollum character from the "Lord of the Rings" films, is reuniting with the trilogy's Peter Jackson to become the man behind the monster in Universal Pictures' "King Kong," the director's retelling of the 1933 classic.

Like he did for Gollum, Serkis will provide motion capture reference for the character of Kong, who will eventually be realized as a completely CGI creature.

Serkis also has been cast as Lumpy the cook, a member of the crew of the Venture, the tramp steamer that sails to Skull Island.

"I expect this time round will be a very different experience for both Andy and myself as we'll actually get to shoot extended drama sequences together," Jackson said in a statement. "It will be a little weird seeing Andy out of his Gollum gimp suit -- and I hope we can both make the adjustment!"

Commenting on Kong himself, Jackson said: "While Andy will provide very valuable onset reference, this doesn't mean we will be softening Kong by attempting to humanize him. The power of the story lies in the fact that this is a savage beast from a hostile environment, and we don't intend to compromise that."

Serkis joins Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody in the cast. Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are writing, with Jackson and Walsh also producing.

Mary Parent, Universal's vice chairman of worldwide production, is overseeing.

Serkis, who is repped by the Gersh Agency and Lou Coulson in the United Kingdom, was most recently seen in "13 Going on 30."

...CBBC Newsround!

Who is he?
The director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was born in New Zealand on Hallowe'en in 1961. Which could explain a lot.

Before he brought the Rings to the big screen Jackson was known for making very scary films for adults. In fact the Fellowship of the Ring was his first major movie that wasn't an 18.

Like a lot of directors he started making home movies at a very young age, although for some reason he didn't get into film school.

Even so he didn't give up, buying a camera out of the wages from his first job and starting to make his first film - called Bad Taste.

Someone at the New Zealand Film institute spotted his talent and gave him some money to finish the film and he never looked back.

I particularly enjoyed reading this gem. ''What other films has he made? Not ones you would have seen. Or at least should have seen because they are nearly all rated 18 in the UK''

Are they crazy? Of course people under the age of 10 have seen his films! Every young nipper was brought up with the anal antics of Heidi the Hippo, Dennis and Bletch. Not the damn Teletubbies!
