Bad Taste

Stories from the Cast

Here is a selection of choice snippets from interviews conducted by Lewman during his trip to New Zealand in 2000.

Pete O'Herne

"Those road signs at about the start of the film one said Castlerock - a wee tribute to Stephen King and the other one that read Kaihoror, the town that the aliens had taken over, well the word means in native moari "TO EAT HUNGRILY"

Pete O'Herne

"The exploding sheep funnily enough was shot by me and Peter Jackson. We were driving away from a day's location shoot (this is a while ago now so i'm straining my brain) Pete stopped the car and said that he wouldn't mind trying a shot out....so we set up a small sorta like a table with explosives and charges on it + we disguised with wool and cloth then. We moved back and set the bolex camera up & then blew it up we did about three different takes. We went for the most impressive one. The rest is really tight editing."

Pete O'Herne

" Getting back to our side of production though we as you will know had to show up every sunday for four years. The day i started going in front of the camera Ihadn't shaved for a few days, so at the end of the days shoot peter said to me with a grin "Pete you're going to have to keep the look till filming has finished" So for 4 years i could only shave once a week! This habit is hard to break even now!"

Pete O'Herne

(asked about the blue car that Dereck drives) " The car that you ask about was or is actually pete's car he bought it off one of the guy's in BT, not one of the main players but one of the extras... from what i recall the car was customised years earlier by a previous owner to travel from A to B with a member of their family, who was disabled. Pete thought the car was cool and the rest is history. The thing with the beatles cutout is pete was/is a beatles fan and when him and me used to drive to location ( in that car)... he always used to play the beatles music....fun times. "

Craig Smith

" On the first day of filming back in '83 we had a brush with the law. As I recall, Pete, Pete O'Herne, Ken Hammon and myself went out in my ex-wifes car (the Morris Minor used in the movie) to film some driving and walking shots. We'd banged up some fake road signs (one was a Steven King in-joke because Pete was reading Christine at the time). Someone spotted us and thought we were defacing actual signs. They called the Police and a patrol car duly arrived - they didn't know quite what to make of us - we were all very young and spotty in those days. "

Craig Smith

" You recall the scene where Pete (as Robert) pulls the rear bumper off the Morris Minor? That wasen't actually in the script - I was moving house a week brfore that days shooting. We were towing a humungous trailer with all our worldly possessions on it - the tow bar and bumper gave up the fight and ripped off as we were driving along. Never ones to miss an oppertunity, we put it into the movie (it saved me having to fix it for the sake of continuity)- in certain scenes you can see the rear bumper is held on by rope. "

Pete O'Herne

" The day we filmed up on the cliff side we were doing the alien sledgehammer fight scene. There was a shot that I'm not really sure what happened, but one of the sledgehammer's was swung rather violently, and the person who was swinging it lost his grip. Mike Minnett who was standing on the cliff top heard a whoosh noise as it flew past his face about an inch away. This was pretty scary stuff as the sledgehammer had so much force it just sailed out over the cliff and landed way down the bank on the rocks! "
