Narnia in Arlington: No Wardrobe Needed

11/02/05, 6:43 pm EST - Xoanon

Welcome to the land of Narnia, where talking creatures abound and a White Witch turns all who cross her into stone. In this cold country where "it’s always winter and never Christmas," hope and faith have seeped away into the snow drifts. The only chance at the spring of change stems from an ancient prophecy centering around "two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve" who will be able to fall the witch and bring peace and hope to the creatures. BOOK REVIEWS: Three different takes on Narnia's creator

11/02/05, 6:35 pm EST - Xoanon

(CSM) - In his erudite new biography of Clive Staples Lewis, Alan Jacobs estimates that from 1949 to 1955, Lewis wrote 600,000 words of prose (not counting work on his book on 16th-century literature). In anticipation of the new movie "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," Harper Collins is releasing all of them, and then some. One hundred and seventy books on, by, or about the famous author and defender of Christianity are being pumped into 60 countries in time for the Dec. 9 premiere. [More]

Beyond the Wardrobe

11/02/05, 6:31 pm EST - Xoanon

In October 1945, C.S. Lewis wrote a slightly grumpy reply to someone asking him to do a book on Christianity, in plain language, specifically for workers. Since giving a series of wartime BBC lectures on the faith's basics, Lewis had become a kind of Christian Answer Man, and frankly, he had other ambitions and projects. "I am nearly 47," he complained. "Where are my successors?" "It's interesting," says Alan Jacobs, author of The Narnian (HarperSanFrancisco), a new Lewis biography, "that 60 years later, nobody has really turned up." Lewis, whose day job was Oxford medievalist, did eventually get around to other work, including seven children's books about a place called Narnia. Ninety-five million Narnia books have been sold since then, and as Disney begins test screenings for its December release of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, based on the series' first volume, the septet is back near the top of the children's best-seller lists. A faun carrying an umbrella. A queen in a sledge. A magnificent lion. The images appeared in the mind of British writer C.S. Lewis more than 50 years ago, prompting him to write "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." The novel about the Pevensie children, evacuated to the countryside from World War II London, and their discovery of the magical land of Narnia on the other side of a wardrobe, has captivated generations of children and adults. North Pole's out; Narnia's in

10/30/05, 10:28 am EST - Xoanon

Most years, shopping malls decorate to look like the North Pole. But this year, a Mecklenburg mall is aiming more for Narnia. Northlake, the newly opened center at Interstate 77 and W.T. Harris Boulevard, is one of 11 malls owned by Taubman Centers Inc. that will be decorated with scenery from the Disney film "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe," set for release Dec. 9. Malls have embarked on smaller-scale film promotions before, and corporate sponsorships aren't unusual. But industry experts say it's rare for a shopping center to focus most of its holiday decorations on a single film. [More]
