Richard Taylor—best known for his Oscar-winning work with the New Zealand F/X house Weta, as well as his collaborations with King Kong director Peter Jackson—told SCI FI Wire that he's spent four years developing a children's television production company, and that the company's first show, Jane and the Dragon, is currently in full production. "There's very little television in the Western world that empowers young girls to act above their station, and our story is a very simple story of a young girl born into a medieval court," Taylor said in an interview. "She's going to become a lady-in-waiting as her mother has and her mother before that, but she doesn't want to do that. She doesn't want to do that. She wants to become a knight, because by being a knight she can change the world around her for herself and her friends." [More]

But Edmund causes most of the problems by taking the side of the evil White Witch. And, ultimately, he makes the biggest change when he repents. Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- New Zealand's film industry is showing it's not all scenery and hobbits. The South Pacific nation's movie business, catapulted to fame by Peter Jackson's ``Lord of the Rings'' trilogy, which was filmed in the country, is tapping a surge in funding to make films such as Toa Fraser's ``No. 2,'' winner of the world cinema audience award at last month's Sundance Film Festival. Local studios have gained from Hollywood-funded productions such as ``King Kong,'' the latest blockbuster by New Zealander Jackson, and Andrew Adamson's production of ``The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,'' both filmed in the country. That boosted production financing to a record NZ$596 million ($406 million) in the year ended March 31, 2005, from about NZ$300 million in 1999. [More]

New Zealand faces competition from Ireland as location for the filming of the next movie in the Narnia series, Prince Caspian. According to the Irish Independent newspaper, Ireland is being looked at as a likely location for the sequel to the Christmas movie blockbuster The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. "Disney scouts are here checking out locations in several counties for Prince Caspian," the paper reported. Irish film industry chiefs said they hoped Disney would opt for Ireland. Ireland offers tax rebates for co-productions which amount to 18 per cent of 60 per cent of the gross spending by a production in Ireland. More than $NZ360 million was spent on the production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, directed by New Zealander Andrew Adamson, which has already grossed ($NZ1.08 billion) worldwide since its December release.
