DVD Tuesday: Hellboy, Aristocrats & More! - Xoanon @ 10:19 PST
All Quiet on the Western Front: This is an English language film (made in America) adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality.

Amazing Screw-On Head: In this hilarious send-up of Lovecraftian horror and steampunk adventure, President Abraham Lincoln's top spy is a bodyless head known only as Screw-On Head (Paul Giamatti). When arch-fiend Emperor Zombie (David Hyde Pierce) steals an artifact that will enable him to threaten all life on Earth, the task of stopping him is assigned to Screw-on Head. Fortunately, Screw-On Head is not alone on this perilous quest. He is aided by his multitalented manservant, Mr. Groin, and by his talking canine cohort, Mr. Dog. Can this unorthodox trio stop Emperor Zombie in time? Does Screw-On Head have a body awesome enough to stop the horrors that have been unleashed? Where can we get a talking dog? All these questions (O.K., maybe not that last one) are answered by the thrilling tale of The AMAZING SCREW ON HEAD! Based on the award-winning comic book by Mike Mignola, creator of HELLBOY.

Anything But Love - Season 1: Jamie Lee Curtis and Richard Lewis star as Hannah Miller and Marty Gold, best friends and co-workers who suppress their smoldering desires, not wanting to spoil their friendship. Once they do take the plunge, though, they quickly discover that falling in love is the easy part! Together, they face some of life's biggest challenges?love, work, love at work, and working at love?with humor, sophistication, and feeling in this unforgettable TV classic.

Aristocrats: This is a documentary about a joke. It is a joke only told by comedians to other comedians. The outline of the joke is that a man goes into an agent's office and says he has a family act. He then either acts out or describes the most obscene acts possible. The stunned agent says, "And what do you call yourselves?" and the man answers, "The Aristocrats." Each comedian describes how he tells the story. Each is different, each tries to get an element of surprise out of their listeners, who are assumed to be other comedians. The joke is told in parts. It is told in reverse order, by men and by women. Each finds a way to make the joke his or her own. The genesis of the documentary was when Gilbert Gottfried performed at the Hugh Hefner roast three weeks after the 9/11 attacks. Everyone was almost afraid to laugh and Gottfried came on second after the first act had bombed. Gottfried told a highly obscene version of the joke that totally broke up the audience. It was never telecast, but changed the whole tone of the evening. Penn Jillette produced the movie as a documentary on the joke every comedian knows but never tells on stage.

The Backyardigans - The Legend of the Volcano Sisters: Play along with Tyrone, Tasha, Uniqua, Pablo and Austin as they transform the backyard into amazing adventures! Journey to a far off land with the Luau Brothers to visit the Volcano Sisters in this exciting new adventure filled with dance and music. Will Tyrone, Pablo and Austin be able to stop the volcano from erupting and ruining the luau by bringing a special gift to Uniqua and Tasha?

Baywatch - Season 3: This long-running series follows the adventures of a team of lifeguards on a crowded resort beach. Veteran lifeguard Mitch Buchannon watches over the younger lifeguards that come and go with each passing season as they keep the beaches safe for vacationers. Frequently he must take action to save them from the raging seas and from the raging tempers that sometimes flare up between the young guards in this stressful job.

Ben 10: Complete Season 1: Ben Tennyson was an average ten-year-old kid on an uneventful summer road trip with his Grandpa Max and Cousin Gwen. That is, till he discovered a strange alien wristwatch called the omnitrix buried in a crashed meteorite. Now, with the omnitrix, Ben can transform into any of 10 alien heroes--each with their own special powers. Realizing this makes him understand he is going the wrong way.

Charlie and Lola, Vol. 3: My Little Town: Granny and Grandpa have given Charlie and Lola an amazing new play set called My Little Town with blocks, crayons, markers, stickers and a huge floor mat for drawing. But sharing it proves to be a bit of a challenge when the trees and flowers from Lola's park get in the way of the airport from Charlie's vast city. China From the Inside: China is a crucial area of study for issues on the environment and development in the Twenty-first century. The tremendous changes taking place in China today will have an impact on the environmental future of the entire world -- not only through issues of global warming but through the development of possible models for ecologically sound economic enterprises. China from the Inside allows us to view the macro-economic issues, the policies that are driving Chinese development, and the micro-level, the impact on the villages and individual families. The challenges of economic development for the environment are complex and profound. It is clear that China will not be able to follow the same path of industrialization, with massive use of fossil fuels to power industry and transportation, as the west has done. Not only would this produce unbearable stress on the environment, it would be impossible because of limited oil and coal reserves for such a path to development.

Two questions remain: what will become of Cinderella and can Anastasia ever find true happiness by marrying someone who will never love her for who she really is? This 74-minute animated tale follows the classic Cinderella and its sequel Cinderella II--Dreams Come True and features nice animation, new conflicts between familiar secondary characters like the evil cat Lucifer and mouse friends Jaq and Gus, lots of new songs, and a suspenseful story line. Flags of Our Fathers (Widescreen Edition): In February, 1945, one of the fiercest battles of the Pacific theater of World War II occurs on the tiny island of Iwo Jima. Thousands of Marines attack the stronghold maintained by thousands of Japanese, and the slaughter on both sides is horrific. Early in the battle, an American flag is raised atop the high point, Mount Suribachi, and a photograph of the raising becomes an American cause celebre. As a powerful inspiration to war-sick Americans, the photo becomes a symbol of the Allied cause. The three surviving flag raisers, Rene Gagnon, John Bradley, and Ira Hayes, are whisked back to civilization to help raise funds for the war effort. But the accolades for heroism heaped upon the three men are at odds with their own personal realizations that thousands of real heroes lie dead on Iwo Jima, and that their own contributions to the fight are only symbolic and not deserving of the singling out they are experiencing. Each of the three must come to terms with the honors, exploitation, and grief that they face simply for being in a photograph.

When Columbia Pictures' financial advisors read the screenplay for the fantasy comedy Here Comes Mr. Jordan, they had their doubts as to its box-office potential. Screenwriter Sidney Buchman went directly to studio president Harry Cohn in an effort to convince him to make the film. Cohn liked the script's uniqueness and, saying that all his bankers wanted was "what sold last year," told Buchman he'd make the picture. To play the saxophone-playing boxer Joe Pendelton, Cohn decided to borrow Robert Montgomery from MGM. Although Mongomery had some initial doubts about his part, he delivered what was to become an Oscar -nominated performance. The film, which received a total of seven 1941 nominations, including Best Picture, won two (Best Motion Picture Story, Best Screenplay). Felled by a single gunshot wound, Reeves (portrayed in Hollywoodland by Academy Award winner Ben Affleck) leaves behind a fiancée - aspiring starlet Leonore Lemmon (Robin Tunney) - and millions of fans who are shocked by his death. But it is his grieving mother, Helen Bessolo (Lois Smith), who will not let the questionable circumstances surrounding his demise go unaddressed. Helen seeks justice, or at least answers. The Los Angeles Police Department closes the case, but Helen hires - for $50 a day - private detective Louis Simo (Academy Award winner Adrien Brody). Simo soon ascertains that the torrid affair Reeves had with Toni Mannix (Academy Award nominee Diane Lane), the wife of MGM studio executive Eddie Mannix (Academy Award nominee Bob Hoskins), might hold the key to the truth. But truth and justice are not so easily found in Hollywood. Simo pursues dangerous and elusive leads in both high and low places and, in trying to turn up the heat, risks getting burned. The detective also uncovers unexpected connections to his own life as the case turns more personal and he learns more about Reeves himself. Behind the icon was a complex man who gave his life to Hollywood in more ways than one.

From "Fear Factor" to "Wife Swap" to "The Apprentice" to "Girls Gone Wild", nothing is off limits. So sit back, relax and let us change the channel for you.

For fans of 28 Days Later and Dead and Breakfast!

The Return of Spinal Tap: The Return of Spinal Tap is based around Tap's performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 1992. In between the footage of Messrs. St. Hubbins, Tufnel, and Smalls performing in front of a huge crowd enthusiastically determined to go along with the joke, there are clips purporting to investigate the band's humble origins in the East London suburb of Squatney, and updates from "rockumentary" director Marty DiBergi and hapless record plugger Artie Fufkin from the original movie. It is the latter component that is the real strength of Return. Though the concert footage faithfully rehashes many of the film's most treasured jokes (the malfunctioning props, the dancing midgets), the real satirical strength of This Is Spinal Tap was never its treatment of heavy metal music (which, after all, is hardly a difficult target). What the first movie did best was illuminate the egomania, paranoia, delusion, and stupidity that are the cornerstones of rock & roll as it is lived. Hollywoodland (HD DVD): Hollywoodland is a uniquely compelling exploration of fame and identity, inspired by one of Hollywood's most infamous real-life mysteries. The film is the feature directorial debut for Allen Coulter (Emmy and DGA Award nominee for his work on The Sopranos and Sex and the City). June 16, 1959. The glamour of Tinseltown permanently fades for actor George Reeves, the heroic Man of Steel on TV's Adventures of Superman, as the actor dies in his Hollywood Hills home.

Plenty of fast action, and plenty of blood and gore.

Running With Scissors (Blu-ray): Based on the personal memoirs of Augusten Burroughs, Running with Scissors is a wickedly funny, brave and moving tale of surviving a most unusual childhood. When charismatic Sam Kim (Sung Kang, PEARL HARBOR, BETTER LUCK TOMORROW, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT) checks into the motel, fatherless Ernest is taken under his wing and hustled toward manhood, for better or worse. But wedded bliss becomes marital mayhem when Ellen turns up alive -- with a hilarious, hair-brained scheme to win back her husband, put a stop to the honeymoon and give first love a second chance-at happily-ever-after!

Murder She Wrote: Complete Fifth Season: Season 5 finds Murder, She Wrote's intrepid Jessica Fletcher in fine sleuthing form, and venturing farther afield from Cabot Cove--a good thing, since at the rate the murders have been happening, that town would be nearly cleaned out. Some of the best episodes take place in more exotic locales like New York (dead man on the street, wearing just one shoe), Montana (a publishing convention gone horribly wrong) and West Virginia (two whistle-blowers at a coal company found gruesomely murdered). Angela Lansbury sparkles with determination and bonhomie, hitting her stride and then some. Jessica's own life backstory is even filled out tantalizingly, especially in the episode "The Last Flight of the Dixie Damsel," in which an investigation is launched into a mysterious cargo plane that is linked, she learns to her horror, to her late husband. The series' other delight is watching for cameos by stars of a certain age, and this season doesn't disappoint, with appearances by Roddy McDowall, Shelley Fabares, and Dinah Shore--but also some up-and-comers like Megan Mullally (proof positive that the Will & Grace whine was a put-on) and future satirist Bill Maher. Extras include a fresh and beguiling interview with Lansbury, who clearly relishes the gift the role of Fletcher was in the latter part of her acting career, as well as other members of the cast and crew.

Neither the Sea Nor the Sand: Recovering from a failed marriage, Anna Robinson (The Three Lives of Thomasina's Susan Hampshire) retreats to the haunting, eerie climes of the Isle of Jersey, where she finds fulfillment in an affair with lighthouse keeper George (The Pianist's Frank Finaly). A lyrical, poetic, undiscovered gem of '70s British horror, now available for the first time ever!

No Shame: A drama teacher, Isabel (Veronica Forque), at a competitive acting school full of hormonal 19-year-olds with big dreams and their hearts on their sleeves, finds herself at a crossroads in life. Twenty years ago she was a struggling actress from a wealthy family. Now, settled into a successful and fulfilling--but much more humble--teaching career, she finds her love life unfulfilled. Her young lover entertains her affections, but he cannot appease her lonliness. When she coincidentally runs into Mario (Daniel Jiminez Camacho), a man with whom she shared a one-night stand in her youth, and finds that he is now a successful director, her heart leaps. NO SHAME concentrates primarily on the lives of the wonderfully energetic acting students, and weaves in Isabel's story carefully, always making sure to keep the students in the spotlight. A tale of love and risking everything in the name of dreams, the Joaquin Oristrell-directed film has a new-agey, bohemian flavor that breathes magical life into the beautiful sets and glowing cast.

Open Season (Full Screen Special Edition): A grizzly bear named Boog, domesticated by a park ranger, Beth, helps deer friend Elliot escape from the mullet-sporting hunter, Shaw. When the animals escape to the forest the pair become lost just as hunting season begins, made worse by the fact Boog doesn't know how to survive outside of his beloved ranch. Elliott and Boog develop a strong bond not only between themselves but also with the wild animals and attempt to drive the hunters out of the forest.

Passion of the Christ: Definitive Edition: The Passion of The Christ focusses on the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth's life. The film begins in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus has gone to pray after sitting the Last Supper. Jesus must resist the temptations of Satan. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is then arrested and taken within the city walls of Jerusalem where leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy and his trial results in a condemnation to death.

Prey: Tom Newman (Peter Weller) can’t join his family on their first African Adventure vacation due to urgent business obligations, but hopes the trip will provide a chance for his son and daughter to bond with his new young wife, Amy (Bridget Moynahan). Their ranger, Brian, decides to add some extra thrills and adventure to their trip and takes them "off roading." All is well until Amy and the 2 kids become lost in a labyrinthine game reserve and begin to be stalked by savage lions who won’t quit until they have dinner. The film is described as "Jaws in the African bush" and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final seconds.

Private Collections: For legendary producer Pierre Braunberger (SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER), it was the most enticing of challenges: Invite the three most controversial directors in modern erotic cinema to indulge their fantasies in one daring film. The result remains one of the most uniquely sensual motion pictures of our time. In the first story from director Just Jaeckin (EMMANUELLE, GWENDOLINE), a castaway sailor is rescued by a tribe of succulent native women - led by the stunning Laura Gemser of BLACK EMANUELLE fame - who soon reveal their most unusual appetites. Then director Shuji Terayama (FRUITS OF PASSION) explores the haunting tale of a Japanese boy seduced by the riddle song of a village madwoman. And in the bold adaptation of a short story by De Maupassant, director Walerian Borowczyk (IMMORAL WOMEN, THE BEAST) reveals the torrid liaison between a Parisian gentleman, a Follie Bergere prostitute and an unexpected surprise that hides in the night.

Rock & Rule: A rock & roll singer searches for eternal life in this animated musical fantasy set in a post-nuclear dystopia. Similar to the earlier Heavy Metal (1981) in tone, this film attempts to incorporate mythical themes and mutant beings with music by Cheap Trick, Deborah Harry, Iggy Pop, and other popular acts of the time, with mixed success. Clive Smith's film was a disappointment at the box-office, but has since attracted a minor cult following.

Rx: A true talent, up-and-comer Ariel Vromen brings to the screen a visually alluring and emotionally charged first feature. With a cast of gifted young actors, Vromen delves into the darker side of the party to reveal that life can change indefinitely when decisions are made with love and friendship on the line. Andrew (Eric Balfour), Melissa (Lauren German) and Jonny (Colin Hanks) are friends in the prime of their lives. But when the real life weight of family misfortune becomes too much for Andrew to bear, he makes a desperately naive decision. What is meant to be a weekend party across the border soon becomes a heartbreaking journey that tests the boundaries of companionship, romantic love and personal ethics. Beautifully composed shots and a stellar soundtrack complete this package, lending Vromen's dark yet moving coming-of-age story a hip edge and resonating style.

Sayonara Jupiter: In the 22nd Century, the United Earth Federation has begun colonizing neighboring planets in the solar system. While attempting to extract water from Mars' polar ice caps, a UEF science team uncovers ancient carvings that describe the crash of an alien spacecraft on the planet Jupiter several millennia ago. The discovery postpones the initial phase of the Jupiter Solarization Project, a plan to transform the gas giant into a second sun, providing both additional solar energy for Earth and making the outer worlds fit for colonization. From Minerva Station in the orbit of Jupiter, Dr. Eiji Honda (Tomokazu Miura, Survive Style 5+, Taste of Tea) is dispatched to ensure that alien life does not exist on Jupiter before the planned mission is to commence. When scientists discover that a black hole is approaching the solar system, Earth's only hope is to abandon the Solarization Project and instead send Jupiter into the black hole. Dr. Honda must race to complete the new mission and save Earth before time runs out! Toho decided in the early 80's to give Japan a space epic of their own to compete with the upcoming sequel to Stanley Kubrick's classic "2001", titled "2010". The result was "Sayonara Jupiter" (aka "Bye-Bye Jupiter"). Directed by Koji Hashimoto (Godzilla 1985, Ghidrah, Latitude Zero) and featuring special effects by Koichi Kawakita (Gunhed, King Kong VS Godzilla), Sayonara Jupiter contains some of the greatest special effects ever produced in the 1980s!

Silence of the Lambs: Young FBI agent Clarice Starling is assigned to help find a missing woman to save her from a psychopathic serial killer who skins his victims. Clarice attempts to gain a better insight into the twisted mind of the killer by talking to another psychopath Hannibal Lecter, who used to be a respected psychiatrist. FBI agent Jack Crawford believes that Lecter who is also a very powerful and clever mind manipulator have the answers to their questions to help locate the killer. Clarice must first try and gain Lecter's confidence before he is to give away any information.

Slaughter of the Vampires: In this lush Gothic romp from the Golden Age of Italian horror, Walter Brandi (The Playgirls and the Vampire, The Bloody Pit of Horror) and Graziella Granata (A Taste for Women) star as a young well-to-do couple terrorized by a love-hungry vampire (peplum and krimi veteran Dieter Eppler, The Sinister Monk) who makes his nest in the lower rungs of their estate. Before the bloodsucker can lay unholy claim to the voluptuous lady of the land, the couple enlist the unusual services of Professor Nietzsche (Luigi Batzella, writer/director of notable nasties Nude for Satan and SS Hell Camp), who is more than determined to rid the world of all vampires. Written and directed by Roberto Mauri (Vengeance is My Forgiveness, Madeline: Study of a Nightmare), Slaughter of the Vampires is a Baroque, beautifully photographed entry in the bosom-heaving world of the romantic vampire, now presented uncut and tranferred from original vault materials.

Tales of Terror from Tokyo 3, Part 1: Just because the gates to the spirit world are usually kept shut does not mean that they cannot suddenly open, that the dead cannot reach out for your throat, that its denizens cannot prowl in abandoned office buildings, or haunt high school video projects. The dark realm is with you, and within you, its emotions calling to yours in shades of horror, of fear, of terror. Writers Kihara Hirokatsu and Nakayama Ichiro have collected these Tales of Terror from accounts told to them as true all over Japan.

Ufc Classics 7: Don "The Dragon" Wilson provides commentary in this edition of the no-holds-barred, real action fighting championship. Highlights include the match between UFC 6 champion Oleg Taktarov and World Shootfighting Champion Ken Shamrock.

Ultimate Fighting Championship Classics, Vol. 8: More bone-crushing, cross-discipline fighting action, featuring four semi-final bouts in which one challenger outweighs the other by more than one hundred pounds. "The Superfight," a match between reigning champion Ken Shamrock and Kimo, the man who defeated Royce Gracie, highlights the event.

Unhitched: When a man learns his worst enemy is about to marry the woman his best friend loves, he vows to break up the wedding any way he can in this outrageous romantic comedy.

Unknown: Academy Award® nominee Greg Kinnear (Best Supporting Actor, As Good As It Gets, 1997; The Matador) and James Caveizel (The Passion Of The Christ) light up the screen in this riveting psychological thriller that delivers nerve-jarring suspense like The Usual Suspects and Memento. Five strangers wake up in a locked warehouse with no memory of who they are or how they got there. Now they are forced on a journey together to discover who is good -- and who is evil -- in order to stay alive. Watch in real time as facts are revealed, the unknown becomes known...and this stunningly unpredictable motion picture leads you down a path of twists and turns that may uncover the truth. Also starring Joe Pantoliano (HBO's The Sopranos), Bridget Moynaghan (I, Robot), Jeremy Sisto (HBO's Six Feet Under) and Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan).

Vigilante: New York City factory worker Eddie Marino (Robert Forster, Oscar(r) nominee for JACKIE BROWN) is a solid citizen and regular guy, until the day a sadistic street gang brutally assaults his wife and murders his child. But when a corrupt judge sets the thugs free, Eddie goes berserk and vows revenge. Now there's a new breed of marauder loose on the city streets, enforcing his own kind of law. His justice is swift. His methods are violent. He is the VIGILANTE. Fred Williamson (FROM DUSK TILL DAWN), Woody Strode (SPARTACUS), Joe Spinell (MANIAC) and Salsa legend Willie Colon co-star in this hard-hitting exploitation classic from director William Lustig (MANIAC COP, RELENTLESS) that many critics consider to be better - and more shocking - than the original DEATH WISH.

Visitors: Venerable British actress Susannah York and up-and-coming star Radha Mitchell head up the cast of this Australian psychological thriller. Both actresses play the character of Carolyn at different stages of her life; bookended with scenes of the elder Carolyn (York) recalling her attempt to sail around the world, the bulk of the film involves the terror-stricken voyage itself. Only in her twenties, the young Carolyn (Mitchell) is filled with hope and fear for her daring solo journey, but once at sea, isolation and solitude begin to take their toll. Soon, Carolyn is encountering people and situations from her past, sometimes with violent, terrifying consequences. When she begins to notice physical evidence of her nightmarish visitors, Carolyn really begins to lose it.

Zatoichi 6: TV Series: The blind masseur Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu) wanders through Japan looking to ply his trade. But wherever he goes, trouble follows and he must use his legendary, lightning sword skills to dispatch evildoers and defend justice.

DVD Tuesday: Yojimbo, Guardian & More! - Xoanon @ 12:03 PST
Angel Face: Otto Preminger, who showed how to mix a beautiful woman with murder in the landmark Laura, directs this tale of a passion gone haywire. Frank's a regular guy with a steady girl and a dream of owning his own garage when he crosses paths with Diane. She wants him. Or does she want a fall guy to blame when Diane's stepmother plunges off a high cliff and leaves her fortune to Diane? Alibis, betrayals, courtroom thrills and the fire of a woman too dangerous to trust and too alluring to resist make Angel Face a film-noir classic.

Apocalypse and the Beauty Queen: Apocalypse and the Beauty Queen is a hip, sexy, thriller with a strong protagonist, a horrifying tyrant, and a series of disturbing twist that build into a shocker of an ending. Amber, the main character is a mixture of beauty queen and revolutionary. After being told she was ugly through childhood, her self loathing became confused once she conquered the competitive world of fashion modeling. Being rejected by the same fashion industry that loved her just a few years earlier (she was in her late 20's), she returns to her small rural hometown. Suddenly the world ends, and Amber finds she has the charisma and strength to help rebuild her corner of the world in her own way.

Beyond Reality-1st Season: Two university parapsychologists investigate reports of ghosts, out-of-body experiences, telekinesis and other unexplained phenomena that occur in ordinary people's lives.

Bounty Hunters-1st Season: No description available

Brokeback Mountain - 2-Disc Collector's Edition: Brokeback Mountain is a sweeping epic that explores the lives of two young men, a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection. The complications, joys and heartbreak they experience provide a testament to the endurance and power of love. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal deliver emotionally charged, remarkably moving performances in "a movie that is destined to become one of the great classics of our time" (Clay Smith, The Insider).

Cocaine Cowboys: In the 1980s, ruthless Colombian cocaine barons invaded Miami with a brand of violence unseen in this country since Prohibition-era Chicago - and it put the city on the map. "Cocaine Cowboys" is the true story of how Miami became the drug, murder and cash capital of the United States, told by the people who made it all happen.

Criterion Coll: Sanjuro: Akira Kurosawa's sequel to Yojimbo is more lighthearted and less cynical, a rousing adventure with Toshir' Mifune reprising his role as the scruffy mercenary who becomes an unlikely big brother to a troupe of nine naive samurai. Shuffling into a secret meeting where the proud young men discuss the graft choking their clan, Mifune's Sanjuro scratches his scraggly beard and distractedly rubs his neck like some common peasant while giving them advice on appearances and truths: "People aren't what they seem," he warns the dubious lads. "Be careful." Naturally they aren't, and Sanjuro grudgingly adopts the well-meaning but hopelessly ill-equipped heroes, giving the starry-eyed youths a series of lessons in real-world honor and respect while saving their skins from reckless attacks and impulsive plans. It isn't the subtlest of Kurosawa's films--the repetitious lessons and speeches delivered to the thickheaded samurai are rather obvious--but it's one of his most entertaining. Mifune, gruffly at ease with the boys, is hilariously discomforted in the presence of a cultured lady, who sees through his shaggy exterior and imparts a little wisdom of her own. Mifune bounds into action in a number of impressive sword fights--wonderfully choreographed lightning-quick battles in which Mifune leaps all over the widescreen image--but an increasing sense of waste, of futility, hangs over the action scenes, culminating in a tense but meaningless duel of honor. The accompanying trailer on the DVD features brief behind-the-scenes glimpses of Kurosawa directing Mifune through an action sequence.

Criterion Coll: Yojimbo: The incomparable Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa’s visually stunning and darkly comic Yojimbo. To rid a terror-stricken village of corruption, wily masterless samurai Sanjuro turns a range war between two evil clans to his own advantage. Remade twice, by Sergio Leone (A Fistful of Dollars) and Walter Hill (Last Man Standing), this exhilarating genre-twister remains one of the most influential and entertaining films ever produced. Criterion is proud to present this Kurosawa favorite in a new, high-definition digital transfer.

Don't Knock the Rock & Rock Around the Clock: Don’t Knock The Rock spotlights rock music in its infancy and features some of the genre’s true originals. DJ Freed is credited with inventing the term, "rock n’ roll," and Haley was a durable star for over a decade, selling 22 million copies of his hit, "Rock Around the Clock," and helping to establish rock music once and for all. Little Richard had his first bonafide hit, "Tutti Frutti," while making this film, and the film shows this self proclaimed architect of rock and roll at the beginning of his storied career. Rock Around The Clock, is a title based on Bill Haley & His Comets’ enormous hit from 1954. In this film, also produced by Sam Katzman and directed by Fred Sears, Haley and friends get to demo their singing chops, singing a string of hits, including the title song.

Don't Knock the Twist & Twist Around the Clock: Twist Around The Clock and Don’t Knock The Twist, both starring Chubby Checker and filmed in the early 1960s, when the Twist was the world’s biggest dance craze, causing whole clubs to be built to accommodate the dance and its many frenzied fans. Both films feature a whole lot of twistin’ combined with decent plots and Twist Around The Clock serves as a showcase for Dion and two of his hit songs, "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer."

Fiddler on the Roof: Film version of the stage musical, based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem. Tevye the Milkman is a Jewish peasant in pre-Revolutionary Russia, coping with the day-to-day problems of 'shtetl' life, his Jewish traditions, his family (wife and daughters), and state-sanctioned pogroms.

Films of Kenneth Anger Vol 1: Cinematic magician, legendary provocateur, author of the infamous HOLLYWOOD BABYLON books and creator of some of the most striking and beautiful works in the history of film, Kenneth Anger is a singular figure in post-war American culture. A major influence on everything from the films of Martin Scorsese, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and David Lynch to the pop art of Andy Warhol to MTV, Anger's work serves as a talisman of universal symbols and personal obsessions, combining myth, artifice and ritual to render cinema with the power of spell or incantation. Covering the first half of Anger's career, from his landmark debut FIREWORKS in 1947 to his epic bacchanalia INAGURATION OF THE PLEASURE DOME, Fantoma is very proud to present the long-awaited first volume of films by this revolutionary and groundbreaking maverick, painstakingly restored and presented on DVD for the first time. Contains the films: Fireworks (1947) Puce Moment (1949) Rabbit's Moon (1950, the rarely seen original 16 minute version) Eaux d'Artifice (1953) Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954)

The Good Guys and the Bad Guys: Marshal Flagg, an aging lawman about to be retired, hears that his old nemesis, the outlaw McKaye, is back in the area and planning a robbery. Riding out to hunt down McKaye, Flagg is captured by McKaye's gang and finds out that McKaye is no longer the leader of the gang, but is considered just an aging relic by the new leader, a youngster named Waco. Waco orders Mackaye to shoot Flagg, and when Mackaye refuses Waco abandons both of them. Flagg then takes Mackaye back to town only to find out that he has been "retired", and when he sees how clueless and incompetent the new marshal and the city fathers are, he persuades Mackaye that it is up to the two of them to stop Waco and his gang from ravaging the town.

The Guardian: The US Coast Guard version of "Top Gun" with a little "An Officer and A Gentleman" thrown in: an aging USCG rescue swimmer's team is killed in a horrific rescue mission. Immediately prior to this terrible event, his wife also announced that she cannot take anymore. His first love is always the rescue mission. This leaves him an obviously emotional wreck. His commender gives him a choice - quit or take a position as an instructor at the USCG training facility in Louisiana. Reluctantly he takes the position. Moving into the school, he immediately increases the 18 week curriculum that routinely fails half of the people that attend. Here he meets a young man with unlimited potential, but with some secret that seems to hold him back as a team player. Delving into his past, links are found that make him a psychic twin to the older man. Thrown into the midst of the story is a romance with a local girl. Rescue missions punctuate the beginning and end of the story with the training sessions the center of the film.

Invincible Iron Man: Past and present collide in this epic adventure that reveals the origin of Iron Man. While raising the ruins of a long buried Chinese kingdom, billionaire inventor Tony Stark digs up far more than he bargained for. He unleashes an age-old prophecy that foretells the resurrection of the Mandarin, the emperor of China's darkest and most violent dynasty. In order to confront the destructive force, Tony creates an armored suit infused with high-tech weaponry. To stop the evil that he himself has raised form the earth, Tony must become his greatest invention everâ€"Iron Man! The newly born champion must travel to the four corners of the earth to battle the Mandarin's henchmen, the Elementalsâ€"four magical warriors who harness the power of the elementsâ€"earth, water, wind, and fireâ€"with deadly chemistry. But is the Iron Knight, as he his known in the prophecy, strong enough to defy fate and turn back the malevolent forces hell-bent on earth's destruction?

Jesus Camp: The feverish spectacle of a summer camp for evangelical Christian kids is the focus of Jesus Camp, a fascinating if sometimes alarming documentary. (Shortly after its release, the movie gained a new notoriety when Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, who appears near the end of the film, resigned his post amid a male prostitute's allegations of drug use and sexual misconduct.) For most of the film, we follow a charismatic teacher, Becky Fischer, as she trains young soldiers in "God's Army" at a camp in North Dakota. Some of the kids emerge as likable and bright, and eager to continue their work as pint-sized preachers; elsewhere, the visions of children speaking in tongues and falling to the floor in ecstasy are more troubling. Even more arresting is the vision of a generation of children home-schooled to believe that the Bible is science, or Fischer's certainty that America's flawed system of democracy will someday be replaced by a theocracy. (In one scene, a cardboard cut-out of George W. Bush is presented to the children, who react by laying their hands on the figure as though in a religious procession.) Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady maintain neutrality about all this, maybe too much so (they throw in some interviews with radio host Mike Papantonio to provide a liberal-Christian viewpoint) and one would like to know more about the grown-ups presented here. Power broker Haggard is the creepiest person in the film, an insincere smooth talker whose advice to one of the young would-be campgoers comes across as entirely cynical. Time will tell whether the film's Christian soldiers will be marching onward.

Sherrybaby: A disturbing film about a recovering drug addict trying to regain control of her life, Sherrybaby succinctly depicts what can happen when want and desire aren't offset by control. In this bleak indie film, Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Stranger Than Fiction, Secretary) has just been released from a three-year stint in prison. Dressed in her inappropriate uniform of a halter top and oh-so-high platform heels, she goes to brother's house to see her 5-year-old daughter, Lexie (Ryan Simpkins). Sherry is determined to be a mother to her child, but without a home, job, or any other form of stability, she grows frustrated and jealous of her brother and sister-in-law's roles in Lexie's life. Tall and willowy, Gyllenhaal brings a sad desperation and simmering sexuality to the role. Sherry's middle-class childhood was a blur of sex and drugs, and she seems incapable of breaking out of that destructive trap. While the script by first-time feature film director Laurie Collyer isn't wholly original, the picture moves at a good pace, giving insight as to why Sherry's resigned to using sex to get what she wants. While the family secret doesn't come as a complete surprise, it is somewhat perplexing that no one addresses it. Ultimately, it's Gyllenhaal who makes you care about a character that most people would've given up on.

(The New York Times).

MI-5, Volume 4: As the fourth season of MI-5 begins the stories are more relevant than ever before. The Night Listener: In the midst of his crumbling relationship, a radio show host begins speaking to his biggest fan, a young boy, via the telephone. But when questions about the boy's identity come up, the host's life is thrown into chaos.

Nude on the Moon & Blaze Starr Goes Nudist: It's a bare-as-you-dare double feature from the Grand Dame of sexploitation, Doris Wishman! Needing an escape from nightclub engagements and her sleazy agent-fiance, legendary red-headed stripper Blaze Starr ducks into a movie theater and sees a film on nudism. Intrigued, Blaze Starr Goes Nudist and checks into Florida's Sunny Palms, where she finds true happiness by strutting around in her birthday suit and discovering the wonders of nude volleyball, nude archery, and, of course, nude checkers. Then a young rocket scientist and his professor friend build a spaceship and blast off in idiotic pajama-like space suits, only to land on the lunar surface and discover a private camp populated by shapely telepathic gals who live Nude on the Moon with antennae on their heads! After first being rendered helpless by a moon doll's magic wand, the men are eventually allowed to wander about and witness the naked marvels of life in outer space, which looks an awful lot like Florida.

Psychopathia Sexualis: Psychopathia Sexualis, Bret Wood's visual adaptation of Richard von Krafft-Ebing's eponymous book, investigates sexual perversity in an attempt to better render Krafft-Ebbing's medical definitions for conditions like necrophilia, vampirism, masochism, and homosexuality. Fictional vignettes enliven chapters in the book, and an omniscient narrator commands attention between live-action scenes. One would expect the explicit nature of this material to be sexy or campy, but it's really not. The scene of a man cowering under his dominatrix's heeled boot is dulled by slow pace. A man getting hypnotized with metronome by Sigmund Freud's teacher (Ebbing) practically hypnotizes the viewer with its severe mood. To its benefit, Psychopathia Sexualis looks like a Goth Guy Maddin film, with its colorful Victorian sets. A couple quick scenes, like a woman's corset being laced up, or the nurse who gets off on her patient's blood-sucking, are inviting in a sensationalistic way. But in general, the film's sections such as "Manifestations," "Methods of Treatment," and "Melancholia" are too belabored to intriguingly reflect the text's case studies. "Methods of Treatment" portrays the dire Victorian asylum, but not in any new light. Psychopathia Sexualis is an anticlimactic take on infinitely fascinating fetishes and obsessions. Though the film is tedious, it still reveals insights about sexuality and its narrow definitions a century ago.

Siberiade: The story about a very small god-forgotten village in Siberia reflects the history of Russia from the beginning of the century till early 80s. Three generations try to find the land of happiness and to give it to the people.
