From: Anthony

I work at a local Blockbuster and get to screen movies before the general public. Just to let you know, the 2nd FoTR trailer appears as the very first trailer on the movie Blow, due out 9/11.

Much like the other stories about the 1st LOTR trailer with '15 Minutes', this may NOT be the case will ALL copies of 'Blow', 'nuff said.

9/09/01, 9:02 pm EST - Xoanon

An extra trying to get into the Matrix sequels tells his tale on what happened during the try outs on Corona Coming Attractions.

New Line Cinema joins airport battle

9/09/01, 8:10 pm EST - Xoanon

David versus Goliath, or should that be Frodo versus Sauron? Just when almost 40 years of residents' battles over excessive noise at Wellington airport seemed dead and buried, a new row has surfaced. The issue is whether Lord of the Rings' American financer, New Line Cinema, should be allowed to fly its executives into the airport in its slightly-too-noisy Gulfstream III jet up to four times a year. Matte Painting Of Mordor?

9/08/01, 8:48 am EST - Strider

[ Click for Larger Version ]

Guy stumbled across this matte painting while looking through the website of established artist Craig Mullins, a man who has worked on films like Contact, 13 Days, Prince of Egypt and also has some artwork in our Fan section. Mullins describes it as "An opening shot for a film test for a film not yet released", so who knows, maybe it could be a test shot for Mordor?

UPDATED
It turns out that the matte painting isn't from Lord of the Rings, but a seperate production.

HarperCollins: "We Fear Book Burn-out"

9/08/01, 6:41 am EST - Strider

Independant.co.uk today posted an article about the tremendous rise in profile the Lord of the Rings has received over the last year, especially sales of the book which have soared to 400 per cent just this year. However, the publisher of Tolkien literature in the UK & Ireland, HarperCollins, fears that this will inevitably cause "a burn-out, that at the end of it, there will be nobody left to read this book and we'll then suffer." Rings deadline looms.

9/08/01, 12:52 am EST - Tehanu

The latest NZ 'Onfilm' magazine has a snippet about LOTR:
"Duplicaton of the first film in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy starts this month so 10,000 to 12,000 prints can be circulated for its worldwide December 19th opening. It's understood Weta Digital has until early next month to deliver its visual effects for FOTR, which will feature such 3D creatures as a cave troll, an octopus with 18 tentacles, and the movie's main monster, the Balrog. According to The Dominion's InfoTech section, Weta has about 160 artists working on the project - double the number originally envisaged. "I never anticipated that it would be as big as this," Weta's chief technical officer Jon Labrie reportedly told a technology seminar in Wellington last month."

Gollum is IN the new TV Spot

9/07/01, 5:23 pm EST - Xoanon

I've been checking around the msg boards and reading all your wonderful emails, and I started seeing a trend, folks started telling me they were seeing Gollum...well..I to have seen him!!

A 30 second spot like this is, of course, really choppy, cuts cuts cuts everywhere...so it's hard to spot. Right at the beginning, just after Gandalf says 'The Shadow...' and just before you hear that high screech of the wraiths...you can see a shot of Sam and Frodo in Mordor, and for just a split second, from the bottom left hand corner of the shot..you can see Gollum pop up!

Confirmations on the TV Spot

9/07/01, 1:26 pm EST - Calisuri

An unnamed source has confirmed a few things from the TV spot released last night. They are spoilers, including how the ring gets slipped on in Bree. Highlight to read:

- That is a shot of Sauron as he faces the Last Alliance.

- The shot of Frodo on the floor with the ring tumbling towards him is in the Prancing Pony in Bree. In this amazing slow-motion shot, the ring "accidentally" lands on the finger of the Hobbit's outstretched hand, after he's fallen from the table. An interesting illustration of the ring's "will."

- The Black Riders are indeed riding out of Mordor.

I have updated the Frame by Frame to reflect this new information.

Timekillers: Namarie, choral version.

9/04/01, 5:51 am EST - Tehanu

Thanks to Andreas and Adriana, we've got a link to that version of Namarie sung in Elvish by a Finnish choir. The music was written for a play based on LOTR. Swedish website Sagan om Ringen has a fun front page, and the Namarie song is under 'Musik.mm.'

DragonCon Wrapup - UPDATE

9/04/01, 12:47 am EST - Calisuri

I just arrived back in LA after an exhausting but wonderfully fun and entertaining weekend in Atlanta. I'll be writing the DragonCon report tomorrow, so expect it sometime around noon PST. (Now, its time to sleep for more than 4 hours a night!)

OR NOT...I realized after starting the report, that to rush it would not do it justice. Look for it this week after I get everyone's impressions. Sorry for the delay.

NEW LOTR:FOTR Trailer?

9/03/01, 10:54 pm EST - Xoanon

Ringer Spy PT sends along word that perhaps a NEW LOTR:FOTR trailer will be hitting the theatres soon! Read on:

Mews from the insider at (*Snip*), he calls to tell me the information for the September/August release of films has passed his desk and attatched as an appendix was a trailer listing. Low and behold Lord of the Rings is listed as Theatrical trailer. He says it is listed only once and so the rumours of a second version may either be false or perhaps it is only listed once to save ink. There is no date apparently but he says generally if it is on the list then it means soon!

Wings & Rings

9/03/01, 9:00 pm EST - Xoanon

From: Ian

I just had to indulge myself with this picture. I have to admit that my passion for aircraft is surpassed by only one thing (I hope my wife doesn't read this), and that is the works of the author JRR Tolkien. Therefore it was a great pleasure to meet Peter Jackson - the director of the forthcoming movie trilogy "Lord of the Rings" at Omaka this Easter. Peter has a great passion for WWI aircraft and took time out from his film work to see his magnificent Sopwith Camel in the air.

Regal, just admit it. You can't resist us!

9/03/01, 8:18 am EST - Calisuri

One of the many little tidbits of information we picked up at DragonCon this weekend involved the highly publicized tiff between New Line Cinema and Regal Cinemas, the largest theater chain in the United States. According to sources, Regal had threatened to NOT show Fellowship of the Ring in their theaters. (They had already followed through on their threat to boycott other New Line films, like Rush Hour 2)

We have a small bit of news to add to the discussion. According to the booking sheets of a certain Regal Cinema, FOTR is on for December 19th. Maybe they finally came to the realization that FOTR will be breaking some box office records. Thanks to Ringer Squid for the tip.
