LOTR and ICQ

5/28/01, 10:24 pm EST - Xoanon

From: Lannon the Wizard

Just a tidbid I thought you might find interesting. The Lord of the Rings Movie is on ICQ's "ICQ Welcome" window that pops up when ICQ starts. The link on the pop-up window leads to an Entertainment section on ICQ's site devoted to LOTR. It includes a link to the trailer, a Behind the Scenes section, a Photo Gallery, a Screen Saver, as well as chat rooms and message boards devoted to the LOTR movie. There's also an ICQ web ring for Middle Earth. But the coolest thing about it all is that the millions of people who use ICQ get a nice picture of the Ring thrown in their face every time they log on. :) That's one way to get more people to the theaters!

Trailer Music: Sneeze and you'll miss it

5/27/01, 1:36 pm EST - Xoanon

Ringer Spy Sean sends in word on a VERY small segment of music used in the trailer.

I just read your piece on the music in the second LOTR trailer and I'm pretty sure that the opening tones (when the New Line cinema logo comes on, together with the first moment of the helicopter shot over the forest) is from the opening notes of a song by Loreena McKennitt called the Mystic's Dream.

Well, I did some research (thanks to Audiogalaxy) and it turns out Sean is right! Check out the track, and all work from McKennitt actually, I love her work. (NEW LINE: GET HER ON THAT 'MUSIC INSPIRED BY...' ALBUM NOW!)

I also thought you'd like to know the source of the music on the trailer - the high-pitched singing towards the end. It's an extract from The Power of One soundtrack, from a track called Mother Africa (reprise) by Hans Zimmer. It's a long track, and the relevant bit is near the beginning.

85% Covered

5/24/01, 8:34 am EST - Xoanon

From: PatWx

I found this little nugget of info buried within an essay that Roger Ebert wrote from Cannes.

Here is Bob Shaye, president of New Line Pictures. He has invested $170 million (270 million I think -Xo) in "Lord of the Rings," which will come out at Christmas. "Everyone thinks we've bet the company," he says, "but after selling the international rights, the video and the after-markets, we're 85 percent covered. What kills me is the cost of sequels. `Rush Hour' cost us $32 million. It's a hit, so we make a sequel. The sequel costs $92 million."
