VARIETY: Ordesky Plays Key Role at New Line

Mark Ordesky is moving from chief of Fine Line to a key role at parent New Line, with all production executives reporting directly to him. Ordesky assumes the title of exec VP and chief operating officer of New Line. He will continue to report to Toby Emmerich, New Line’s president-CEO. Emmerich said New Line would continue to produce 10-15 films per year while Fine Line will generate three to six titles.”

The Oscars will probably go on. That's as specific as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences can be, as war with Iraq seems unavoidable. With talk centering on a mid-March attack, the timing couldn't be worse for the planned March 23 Oscar telecast. But even if troops invade, the ABC show -- second only to the Super Bowl in annual viewership -- is unlikely to be delayed, academy officials say. [More]

Both films are in the Top Grossing Movies of All Time Worldwide, at 5th and 7th place. Interestingly ALL of the top ten except Titanic are SF or fantasy and the genre massively dominates the top 25. Weaving Returns In Rings

Hugo Weaving, who plays elvish leader Elrond in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, told SCI FI Wire that his character will have a brief but important role to play in the third and final film, The Return of the King. "Elrond's not really a major character on the screen," Weaving said in an interview. "He sort of embodies certain elements of Middle-earth, and he's the character who understands the prehistory. He kind of brings with him the great weight of years. [He is] like 3,500 years old, ... so he's kind of been around." [More]

Sir Ian McKellen on 'The Hobbit'!

Time Europe has a nice interview with Sir Ian McKellen online in which he fires up the rumors about a "Hobbit"-prequel again. McKellen said: 'I want to play Gandalf again, in The Hobbit. I've asked Peter Jackson if he'll produce the prequel as a huge, yearlong television series. All those different strands to the story seem perfect for TV, and we'd do every scene of it. It could be marvelous.'
