Tolkien Estate Gets Order Against Hobbit Uploaders

2/22/07, 8:03 pm EST - Xoanon

Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) -- The estate of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien won a court order against a file-sharing Web site whose members posted scanned copies of the fantasy writer's work. The order, which was issued earlier this month by the federal court in the Southern District of New York, forces ESnips Ltd. to identify the subscribers who have posted the material, the trust's lawyer said in a telephone interview today. High-quality copies of The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, the History of Middle Earth and the Silmarillion had been posted on the site, according to U.K. law firm Manches, which is representing the trust. While ESnips agreed to remove the material, it refused to identify the names of the posters without a court order, Manches's Steven Maier said. [More]

ROTK Rotten Tomatoes Survey

2/20/07, 9:56 pm EST - Xoanon

Cynthia writes: I just wanted to let you know that the Rotten Tomatoes survey of the Best of the Best Picture Winners ranked ROTK as the 22nd of 79. It was one of only 4 in the top 25 from 1990 to the present (Silence of the Lambs--1991--at 24, Unforgiven-- 1992--at 19, and Schindler's List--1993--at 18). The list included recent Best Pics Crash (2006) which came in at 74, A Beautiful Mind (2002) at 70, Gladiator (2000) at 69, and Chicago (2003) at 54. None in the top 10 were from after 1974. So, all in all, pretty good among the more recent releases. [More]

For New Line, an Identity Crisis

2/19/07, 6:18 pm EST - Xoanon

He emerged from the coma and after two months in the hospital, he was permitted to go home to his Manhattan residence. Even then he took many months to recover, unable initially to walk for more than two or three minutes at a time, and slowly taking up work again. But Mr. Shaye says he thinks more clearly now than he did before his illness. “It’s difficult to explain, but I have a clarity of thought and, I believe, of reason, which was one of the gifts” of his illness, he said. And, he added, “I certainly appreciate the normal functioning of life a lot more.” One thing that has not been blunted by illness is Mr. Shaye’s temper, which flared last year when he was asked about a lawsuit filed by Mr. Jackson over profits from “The Lord of the Rings.” [More]

Lord of the Rings Online a contender?

2/17/07, 4:35 pm EST - Xoanon

Early word is that the game is actually a potential contender against the juggernaut known as the World of Warcraft. Turbine has incorporated the best elements from their semi-love-or-totally-hate Dungeons and Dragons Online game, while making LOTRO more accessible.Turbine will begin stress testing the game on Feb. 23, which is the best opportunity to try out the game for those remotely curious. A few of the people we spoke with said that the reason the game works is because the Tolkien lore is solid and robust and it is WoW-esk enough to be accessible to the masses, but different enough to be an alternative.
