The One Ring. The most powerful of the Rings of Power, forged by Sauron in Orodruin with one charge: to dominate all others. The Dark Lord let much of his original power pass into the Ring and with it he secured the foundations of the Dark Tower and subjugated the possessors of the nine rings to his will. It served as a focus for Saurons power, and yet, by infusing the One Ring with the bulk of his power, he had also devised a way for his enemies to destroy him.[More]

Which culture do you think was the greatest of Middle Earth? Not an easy question considering what we've got to choose from. And what exactly makes a culture great? Tolkien filled Middle Earth with fascinating cultures and he gave them languages, complex histories, tragedies and triumphs. Elves, Dwarves and Men all created grand realms that would shape and change the world for good and bad. And what about the Shire? -
Jincey @ 23:18 PST

TheOneRing.net is proud to once again bring you a chance to learn a bit of the fair tongues collectively know as Elvish. Please join Kris Nelson, Jeff Sherrill, and Paul Dunne (Dragon*Con's Elvish 101 guys) for a general introduction to Tolkien's Elvish languages as a whole and a tour of online and other resources for Tolkien linguists.

Paul, Jeff, and Kris will also be asking what specific interests folks have in the different languages, in order to plan future lessons. Join us in #TheHallofFire Wednesday 8pm EDT, 5pm PST, 1am GMT. (And YES, we will post a transcript as soon as possible!)

Meanwhile the Captains of the West hold a debate in the tents of Aragorn. For though one battle is won, Sauron is now massing armies so great that the defeat of Gondor seems inevitable.[More]

Sauron, is best-known as the Dark Lord of Mordor – the terror of the Third Age. However, as Gandalf points out, he was not always evil. Originally a Maia of Aule, he was corrupted by Melkor, becoming his most powerful servant. It was only after Morgoth’s fall that Sauron took the place as the new Great Enemy of the free peoples of Middle Earth. [More]

Eowyn and Theoden are borne off the battlefield in honour, while noone notices a small fatigued Merry wandering in the background with tears filling his eyes. When Pippin finds his friend, Merry is already falling under the Black Shadow. Soon the wounded are all laid in beds in the houses of healing, but though they are tended well there seems to be no cure for the shadow of the nazgul. But then a wise woman of Gondor remembers an old proverb; "the hands of the king are the hands of a healer".[More]

The valar, the angelic powers of the world who entered Ea to fulfill the vision of Illuvatar. There they made the lands, the seas and the stars. They made the sun and the moon, and fought Melkor for the mastery of the earth. And above all; they made the lands habitable for the children of Illuvatar. But with the coming of elves and men their guardianship was wrought with troubles, and their actions were often strangely inadequate and unperceptive.[More]
