Hall of Fire Chats for December 15th & 16th
-
Strider @ 12:37 PST

So we're finally here....a little under three years of waiting, reading casting rumours, more waiting, watching the original teaser trailer with joy, a little bit of waiting, hungrily gulping down any photos from the production, going nuts over the trailers, more waiting, reading about the Cannes footage, a summer break, then trailers, commercials, soundtracks and more. After all this, it's finally here. The first installment of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the Fellowship of the Ring. This weekend, the Hall of Fire crew invite you to come visit us as the minutes tick away from Wednesday the 19th as we look at:

An overview of the Fellowship of the Ring

To get you in the mood for this Wednesday's release (as if you needed any help), we're going to be going through the Fellowship of the Ring chapter by chapter, character by character, setbacks and challanges, journeys and adventures. Basically, it's a chance to talk about anything and everything Fellowship of the Ring relate and sharing your favourite moments with your fellow Tolkien fans.

And what are your favourite moments? Bilbo's Birthday party? Frodo's fun and games in Barliman's inn that landed him in hot water with Strider? And what about the Moria sequences, does Doom Boom Boom mean anything to you? With this in mind, we'll talk both about the book and how you think it'll be portrayed on celluloid from what you've seen over the last year. We're interested in what you have to say because this is a discussion for YOU, the fans.

Join us for the last Hall of Fire discussion before our worlds are changed forever by Peter Jackson's masterpiece, and count down the minutes until the release of Fellowship of the Ring in over three days time.

Hall of Fire Chats for December 8th & 9th
-
Strider @ 09:44 PST

Finally, after it began in February with A Long-Expected Party, the Hall of Fire's chapter by chapter discussion of the Fellowship of the Ring finally reaches its end this weekend with the final chapter:

Book II, Chapter X - The Breaking of the Fellowship

Having already faced all kind of adversity and having lost their leader so early in their quest, the Fellowship stop under the shadow of Tol Brandir, the decision of what to do next yet to be made. During the night, the treath of Orcs still disturb Aragorn, who faces the difficult task of deciding the Fellowship's fate the next day.

However the decision seems to fall on Frodo the Ringbearer himself and not Aragorn. Confused and indecisive, Frodo leaves the group to think about what he shall do next. But he is not alone as he would like, and Boromir joins him, feigning concern for his safety and nothing else. However, his intentions seem all too clear, as he talks about dreams of defeating the Enemy with the Ring and becoming a mighty king of men. Frodo uses the Ring to escape Boromir's manic disposition, and Boromir soon realises why, how and what madness came over him.

But it is too late. Frodo decides that it should be his burden alone to go to Mordor and destroy the One Ring, leaving his friends behind. As they search for him, they are ambushed by an Orc party, and it is only Samwise who manages to catch Frodo. Together, they depart their friends and set out on the journey to Mordor on their own, not knowing what dangers face them ahead, and what dangers they have left their friends in behind them.

Join us for the last Fellowship of the Ring chapter discussion, as we get set for the Worldwide release of Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring in eleven days time.

BursarWatch!!!
-
Jincey @ 20:09 PST

As the date for the release of FoTR comes nearer and nearer, I sit back and watch the media feeding frenzy begin.

Even though I am currently out to sea, we still get Satellite TV here. It looks as though this is going to be one of the biggest film events of the Century, but if they asked any one of us, we could have told them much sooner!!!

I see references to TORN just about everywhere I turn anymore. From an article I read in Entertainment Weekly, you know.... the one with the collective LOTR covers... I read a little bit about all us Ringers! It looks as though we regulars at Barliman's were the most outspoken fans out there, and I wouldn't have that any other way. I realize that since I joined the Navy, I have not been able to talk with y'all so much as I used to, but I was (and still am!!) part of something special, a part of pop culture and history. That is soooooooo cool. If I have kids, they're gonna see these movies and I can tell them about all the friends I had that shared my love of this story. I had never felt like a part of something bigger than my hometown before I met y'all, and now my part, however small, is part of this great tapestry. Thank you all for giving me a chance to show the world just how much this story means to me, and for having the chance to meet all you wonderful people. And if a documentery were ever made about us, I hope that TheBursar will not be forgotten. If anyone deserves a documentary about what this film MEANS, it's us. That would rock. So attention guys that make films like "Trekkers" and those films about the Star Wars franchise....you're looking at a goldmine here with LOTR!

Thank you all for bringing me closer to the best story I've ever read,

Your Buddy,
TheBursar

Hall of Fire Chats for December 1st & 2nd
-
Strider @ 15:04 PST

With less than three weeks to go until the Fellowship of the Ring hits movie theatres all over the world, the Hall of Fire crew invite you to join us as we discusses the penultimate chapter of the Fellowship of the Ring:

Book II, Chapter IX - The Great River

With the river bearing them towards to Rauros and with nothing but the birds as their company, the Fellowship approach the northern border of Rohan as they pursue their journey do destroy the ring. However, both Sam and Frodo believe that they are being trailed by Gollum, searching for his precious after escaping from the Elves who held him captive.

However, Sam and Frodo are not the only ones aware of their tracker: Aragorn has known of his presence ever since their departure from Moria from which point Gollum began tracking them. Watching their rear vigilantly, the travellers continue their voyage, noticing an eagle flying high in the air as they go.

Before long they are assailed from both sides by shadows in the trees, and watch a dark winged shadow pass them overhead. Piercing the shape with one of Legolas's bows, their enemy disappears and the Fellowship finally arrive at the Pillars of the Kings, the breathtaking statues of Isildur and Anárion, men of old. Finally the Fellowship stop short of the great falls of Rauros, the last stage of the Quest before them.

If you're looking for something to get you in the mood for December 19th (as if you needed any help) come visit us this weekend as we discuss the what will undoubtedly be one of the most breathtaking sequences in the Fellowship of the Ring movie.

Hall of Fire Chats for November 24th & 25th
-
Strider @ 17:04 PST

When the filming of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy began in 1999, one of the most hotly discussed debates, in which everyone had an opinion, was who would score the movies themselves? Who would be given such a difficult task as bringing Tolkien's words pages to life and capturing the essence and emotion perfectly in such an important project? John Williams? James Horner? Hans Zimmer?

In the end it would be the job of Howard Shore, a distinguished and critically-acclaimed Canadian composer, known for his work on films like Dogma, Silence of the Lambs, Se7en and Philadelphia. In September of this year, he visited London to record the Fellowship of the Ring score with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. His songs along with those created by Irish vocalist Enya, famous for her unique style of New Age music and her song 'Only Time' which became a global hit when used with coverage of September 11th, were released on November 20th, one of the most anticipated soundtracks ever.

The signs are that Shore has done the job asked of him; already critics have talked about an Oscar next year. With rave reviews from both the critics and the fans, it seems that songs such as 'Bridge of Khazad Dum, 'Lothlórien', 'May It Be', and 'The Prophecy' will bring out many emotions from fans as they watch the Fellowship of the Ring on December 19th. This weekend, come along and join the Hall of Fire staff as we discuss the newly-released FOTR soundtrack, its beauty, its failing, and most importantly what it means to you.

Hall of Fire Chats for November 17th & 18th
-
Strider @ 15:14 PST

'Now is the time, when those who wish to continue the Quest must harden their hearts to leave this land. Those who no longer wish to go forward may remain here, for a while. But whether they stay or go, none can be sure of peace. For we are come now to the edge of doom.' The words of Galadriel are resolute yet foreboding, as the Fellowship are faced with the decision of now that they leave Lothlórien where do they go? To Minas Tirith and Gondor? To Mordor itself? Or by some other means? This weekend, the Hall of Fire discusses:

Book II Chapter VIII - Farewell to Lórien

With the time of rejoining their journey at hand the Felllowship debate deeply of what way to go next. With heavy hearts they depart in the boats kindly provided by their new Elven friends at the banks of the Silverlode. After one final meal, each Fellowship member receives a parting gift from Lady Galadriel, each one as unique as the one before it. And with that, they set off on the Great River, Anduin. But unknown to the company, one of their member's heart has already turned itself towards the power of the One Ring.

This weekend, we have three chats across the world to accomodate as many people as possible, and we hope you join us for what should be a fantastic discussion. So come on...join in!
